Your child will be learning a number of things alongside the art of Okinawan Karate such as self-defense, awareness on all levels (including stranger awareness), patience, muscle control and self-control. They will obtain coordination, timing, a sense of strategy, leadership skills and an abundance of self-confidence.
But as with anything new they will start with the basics. In the first months of their training they will learn the basic punches, kicks and stances of karate. They will learn to warm-up and stretch before jumping into any strenuous work-out. They will become proficient in the basics of karate and over years of training they will develop the complete and mature set of characteristics and skills as mentioned above.

If it's indeed true that an individual can be born to do one specific thing with their life, better than anything else they can do, then I was born to teach karate - specifically to kids. Due to just the right personality traits within me, I'm able to teach the martial arts to just about any child willing to learn. My patience, understanding and communication skills allow me to do this. I bring this to light strictly for one point. Just because a karate school is open and accepting students, does not mean it
houses the instructors capable of quality teaching. The usual goal of those schools is to make lots and lots of money. And we haven't even discussed the issue of standards.
I strongly believe in communication and understanding. Clear instruction will allow the child to understand what is expected of them. I'm an advocate for visual learning as most learn best by example – so I make it a point to teach visually whenever possible. I believe in keeping learning fun, so will often include challenging and entertaining activities into the curriculum. And lastly, my teaching method involves constant positive reinforcement so the students know they are improving in a healthy manner; while never hesitating to politely correct and notify students of bad habits or mistakes.

Absolutely! The list of benefits in children (and adults) studying the martial arts is a long one. Many are mentioned in the 'What they learn' portion of this page. Some may think the martial arts advocate violence but on the complete contrary it promotes the opposite: peace, control, strength, discipline, and health - mentally as well as physically. In addition, your child will gain improvement in coordination, balance, and fine motor skills. It is hard work and takes many months and sometimes years to see results but it's benefits are infinitely rewarding.
A healthy body leads to a healthy mind. When you exercise, your brain releases endorphins, the pleasure hormones, which elevate your mood and give you feelings of well being. As little as 40 minutes of exercise three times a week can provide a happiness habit that extends to all areas of your child's life.
